Navier–Stokes

01Circulation

A swirl takes shape.

Rotation gathers into a recognizable tube. The motion is still broad and distributed, before the vortex begins to stretch.

BEHIND THE FLOW

01 / THE PHENOMENON

When a swirl
meets its limit.

The Navier–Stokes equations describe fluid motion through a balance of acceleration, pressure, viscosity and external forces. The incompressibility condition says the fluid does not locally expand or compress. [1] ↗

∂tu + (u · ∇)u = −∇p + νΔu + f∇ · u = 0

The mathematical question is whether a smooth three-dimensional flow can lose that smoothness in finite time. A numerical image cannot settle it: a proof must control what happens at arbitrarily small scales. [1] ↗

OpenAI reports a vortex whose core narrows as it stretches, with unbounded speed but finite total energy under smooth external forcing. [2] ↗

How can the energy stay finite?

A peak value and a total are different things. A taller and taller spike can occupy a smaller and smaller region. As a simple mathematical analogy, increasing a quantity by a factor of n inside a volume of n⁻³ makes its squared-volume contribution scale as n² × n⁻³ = n⁻¹. This is an illustration of the distinction, not the research construction.

Here, you are exploring a visual metaphor. The filaments are procedural curves, the particles are decorative tracers, and every displayed size and speed stays finite. This is not a fluid solver or a reproduction of the proof.

The official Clay formulation includes breakdown statements that allow smooth forcing. A forced counterexample does not, by itself, resolve the unforced problem. [1] ↗

IMMERSIVE WEBXR

the vortex.

Checking for a compatible headset…

Publish this HTML on an HTTPS website, then open that address in a headset browser with immersive WebXR support, such as Meta Quest Browser. Select Enter VR and approve the browser prompt. A desktop preview is not a VR headset.

Point + triggerUse the floating controls to pause, run the sequence, change the palette, recenter or exit.Left thumbstickLeft/right rotates the object; up/down adjusts its size.Right thumbstickLeft/right moves through the deformation sequence.Room scaleHead movement changes your view. There is no automatic camera motion or joystick locomotion.

Stay within your headset’s safe boundary. Use the in-world Exit VR button or your headset’s system menu to leave.

For headset testing, use HTTPS. An unencrypted LAN address such as http://192.168.… normally cannot start WebXR. Localhost is only local to the device opening it.
Rendering and tracking use the WebXR Device API ↗. Feature availability depends on the headset and browser. Controllers are recommended.
